Coffee Cup
A New Bistro table for Our Morning Coffee

Monday, July 15, 2013

With the age of sixty years a full block-and-a-half away in my rear view mirror, and years of bicycling in my knees, it was getting more and more difficult to sit on the floor first thing in the morning at our coffee table for our morning nourishment and kick start. To be a bit more accurate, it wasn't the sitting down that was the challenge, it was the getting up. So I finally was able to get to work and build this:

You will remember the cabinet on the wall (in the background of the above photo) having a story, and this bit of construction is no different. The vertical supports were cut from part of our old waterbed frame. Over the twenty-five or thirty years we have had that I figured that the wood was well stressed and ready for a rest itself. The base and horizontal members were some old 2x4's that were part of the stake-sides I built for our trailer which was the bed and rear frame from a 1948 Studebaker pickup truck.
The top is the star of the show. It is birch and use to be a small elementary school table used in kindergarten. I have no idea how old it was, but it had seen decades of use when I saved it back in about 1980. Teachers had affixed self-stick shelf paper of some sort to the top, and where it was coming loose along the sides they held it in place with staples into the edges of the wood. The school where I worked was discarding them and so I took two home, sanded and refinished them, and this top was on a similar base I built, but at coffee-table height. I have another on the original base with the under-side wood book shelf still in place.
